This book owes its origin to a series of lectures on Scandinavian loanwords in Old and Middle English held by Professor Eilert Ekwall at the University of Lund in the session 1939-40. Inspired by these lectures I made a study of the rivalry of taken and nimen in Middle English, and by degrees this study later developed into the present work. My gratitude to Professor Ekwall for the initial impulse he gave me should not make me forget to thank him, deeply and respectfully, for the stimulating interest he has constantly taken in the progress of my work and, not least, for all that he has meant to me as my teacher in English philology in years past.
